KrataaThe household receipt appWaitlist opens soon

Every line on every receipt.

Krataa is an iPhone app, in beta, for a household's receipts. Photograph one, or share a screenshot of an online order, and Krataa writes down every line: what was bought, at what price, where and when.

Groceries $30.91, Toiletries $3.29, tax $0.27. It adds up to the printed total.

Sample data, drawn for this page: a receipt as the store printed it, and the same receipt in Krataa's receipt screen. The store, the people and the prices are invented.

The ShelfA thing joins on its second receipt

See what your usual things cost, receipt after receipt.

Buy something on two receipts and it joins your Shelf. Krataa sets the latest price beside your usual one: the middle price of your other receipts in the last 90 days, for the same kind and size.

A different size starts its own line. It gets a note, never an arrow.

Sample data. Each slip is the same printed line, taken from a different receipt. The dashed line and the slips are this page's drawing; the phone shows the app's Shelf. In the app, an item's price line follows one kind and size at a time.

MoneyKept = In minus Out, plus what came back

The household month, with no bank link.

Money adds up the month from what you put in: your receipts, the bills you type by hand, the paychecks you confirm with a tap. There is no bank connection, and nothing is recorded without you.

A paycheck or a bill you expect waits on its day. Krataa asks, and records it only when you tap.

Sample data: the same month on the app's Money screen. The outer ring is spending against the plan you set, the inner ring is income against what you expect.

The rule, with this sample month's figures. Out is what was paid at the register, sales tax included. Money that comes back, a refund or a return, is added on its own and never called income. On the Money screen the figure reads Net so far.

A bank statement shows the total. Only the receipt shows the lines.

Krataa connects to no bank, no store account and no inbox. It starts from the receipt, on paper or on a screen, and you are the one who adds it.

How automatic itemizing worksWhat a receipt knows that a statement does not

The vaultSoonest deadline first

Sample data. The hardware shop and its 30 days are invented. A store that is not on file gets no countdown.

Know how many days are left to take it back.

When a receipt is itemized, each thing that can go back gets its own window: the day you bought it plus the store's return window. The vault lists what is still open, soonest first.

Turn on alerts and Krataa sends one at 9 in the morning when a window closes within 2 days. Alerts are for deadlines and paydays. Never marketing.

Krataa counts the days only for stores whose return window it has on file. Today that is a short list of stores in the United States, kept by hand and still being checked. Food, fuel, bills and services open no window, and an alert goes out only for an item of $20 or more.

AccountOne household, one record

One record for the household. Nobody is told who owes whom.

Invite someone with a 6-character code. When a member lets them in, everything is shared: the receipts, the Shelf, the month. Photograph the same receipt twice and it counts once.

A name beside a receipt is there to jog a memory. Krataa keeps no per-person balances.

  1. Ama makes a code

  2. Kojo enters it. Ama says yes

  3. One Ledger, one total

Sample data. A code is good for one join, for 7 days, and someone inside still has to say yes. The other phone shows the same record when it next refreshes.

How it stands today.

Krataa is early. Here is the beta, itemized, with what is not built printed in red. And three things the app itself says when it is not sure, or has nothing to show yet.

  • A receipt can wait, or fail. One that is not itemized yet counts toward nothing, and the Ledger says which ones need you.

  • Itemizing can make mistakes. Krataa checks that the lines and the tax add up to the printed total, and asks you about a line it is not sure of.

  • Discover starts empty. It compares what households paid at the same store chain, and shows a price only after five households have added one. None has been published yet.

Questions10 short answers

Common questions.

Is Krataa free?

It is free during the beta. There are no ads, and your data is never sold. Nothing has been decided about a price after the beta, so this page does not promise one.

Which phones does it work on?

iPhone, with iOS 16.4 or later. There is no iPad, Android or web version. You sign in with Apple before anything else.

When can I get it?

Krataa is on TestFlight, Apple's beta channel, by invitation. It is not on the App Store yet. The waitlist opens on this page soon.

Does it connect to my bank?

No. Krataa connects to no bank, no store account and no inbox. You add each receipt yourself: a photo, a screenshot or a PDF of an online order, or a purchase typed by hand.

How does a photo become lines?

After your first receipt is saved, Krataa asks once whether to turn on automatic itemizing. Say yes, and it lists the store, the date, each line and its price, the tax and the total, and checks that the lines add up. It can make mistakes, so anything it is not sure about is marked for you to check. Say not now, and receipts are saved and not itemized.

What happens to the photo?

It is stored in your household's account, and itemized only if you turn automatic itemizing on. Photos are never sold. For now the app cannot show you the original photo again. It shows the itemized receipt.

Does it show what other stores charge?

Today, only what is on your own receipts. A part of the app called Discover compares your prices with what other households paid at the same store chain in your state. It shows a price only after five households have added one, and none has been published yet.

Can I take my data out?

Yes. In Account, Export everything hands you one spreadsheet (.xlsx) with your receipts, lines, items, claims and a monthly summary. Export is never locked. Photos are not in it.

What happens if I close my account?

Closing your account signs you out for good. What you added stays with your household, so the others keep every receipt and figure. Erasing your data from inside the app is not built yet.

What does the name mean?

Krataa is a Twi (Akan) word for a letter, a written paper.
